Bovec in the Soca Valley

Posted by

Bovec is a small town with just under 3,000 inhabitants in the north-west of Slovenia. It is located a few kilometres west of the only national park in Slovenia, the Triglav in the Slovenian Alps. The Soca River flows through the southern part of Bovec. The region owes a tourism boom to this river in the last 2-3 decades. The region developed into an important international centre of white water sports.

Canoeing and kayaking on the Soca River is the big trend. In the meantime, the fun sport of rafting has also been added. Rafting is navigating white water with special inflatable boats, so-called rafting boats. Several companies in Boves compete for kayak customers and rafting holidaymakers. The agencies also offer courses for kayaking and canoeing and rent boats and equipment. More information about water sports in Slovenia can be found here.

Bovec also offers sports in winter. The Kanin ski area, west of Bovec, is one of the largest ski regions in Slovenia. A gondola lift, several chair lifts and drag lifts take ski holidaymakers up the mountains. The higher altitudes are considered snow-sure in winter. From around November to May, the lifts are open for tourists with skis or snowboards. The Kanin area lies directly on the border with Italy. The ski areas on both sides of the border are connected.

Orientation Bovec

Much of Bovec, which is rather small, is on the main street with the almost unpronounceable name “trg golobarskih žrtev”. Here are many restaurants, bakeries, fast food places, a bigger supermarket and so on. There are large car parks, some of which are chargeable during the day during the week.

The river Soca with the water sports is a little more than 1 kilometre south of the centre of Bovec. A lot is around the bridge that connects Bovec with Cezsoca. This is where many of the water sports enthusiasts get into the water, this is where the white water schools and equipment rentals for water sports are. There are several large, free car parks around the narrow bridge.

By car to Bovec

If you are coming from Germany or Austria, you can usually reach Slovenia via the motorway at Jesenice or via the Wurzen Pass to Kranjska Gora. If you want to get to Bovec, you should also drive from the motorway to Jesenice first.

Now you have 2 options. The more interesting route leads over the high Vršič Pass (1611 metres above sea level). This route is closed in winter, from of to April. The other option is via Italy, through the town of Tarvisio and then over the Predil Pass back to Slovenia to Bovec. This pass is only 1156 metres high. Both routes are beautiful, it takes about 45 minutes from Kranjska Gora to Bocev on both. The route over the high Vršič Pass is a few kilometres shorter, but it is much slower (many curves).

If you want to drive from Bovec to Ljubljana, you can either go via Krajska Gora (see above) or through the mountains on road 102 (shorter, but takes a long time).

Stay overnight in Bovec

So there is actually something going on in Bovec all year round. The whitewater season is from about April to October, while the ski season is from about December to April. Since most of the water sports enthusiasts in the Soca are young people, there is a lot of simple accommodation in Bovec. These include camping sites, private youth hostels (internationally known as hostels) and simple private room rentals and guesthouses. Camping is particularly cheap and popular. As far as we know, there are currently three great campsites in Bovec. In addition, there are about four more sites in the surrounding area in the Soca Valley, all close to the river. Prices for guesthouses and hotels in Bovec are higher in summer than in winter.

Buses Bovec

The best way to reach Bovec by public transport is from the south. Many buses go from Nova Gorica and Most na Soci to Bovec. There you can change to other buses or trains. Unfortunately, Bovec does not have a train station. There is also at least one bus a day from the capital Ljubljana directly to Bovec.

Unfortunately, scheduled buses run between Bovec over a high pass with many serpentines to Kranjska Gora (northbound) only in summer. In July and August the connections are good with about five trips daily in both directions. In other months, these buses run much less frequently, and not at all in winter. Unfortunately, according to our information, there are no buses from Bovec to nearby Italy.

Bovec is therefore comparatively difficult to reach by public transport. Better bus connections or a railway line would certainly bring even more tourists from abroad to Bovec.
