Izola (spelled Isola in Italian) is still a rather quiet place. The many regular visitors appreciate the great old town, the large harbour and the Mediterranean flair of the city. Here you can still watch the fishermen mending their nets at the harbour and enjoy dinner with locals in an old fish taverna. Prices are noticeably lower than in the holiday strongholds of Portoroz and Piran.

City Izola at Slovenian coast

Izola hardly has any absolute top sights to offer. A stroll through the alleys of the old town, where all the tourists still get lost days later, is probably the highlight in Izola. Many of the alleys are only 1-2 metres wide, cars are not everywhere in the old part of Izola.Izola Slovenia, narrow street

Izola’s good and very helpful tourist information office is in a larger alley in the old town, not far from the sea.

At the seaside you can enter the water at some places, also water sports including boat rental are offered. The cityscape is dominated by the large harbour. Most of the boats are yachts, but there are still some fishermen with small boats in Izola. A modern, wide promenade runs along the harbour.

Restaurants Izola

The choice of restaurants in Izola is for the most part good and reasonably priced. Here are some restaurant recommendations.

The Okrepcevalnica Cantina is a good value and a little insider tip. Almost all main courses cost less than 10 euros. The “Mixed Grill” (mixed grill plate) for 8 euros is a bargain. For the same price you can get spaghetti with seafood or grilled ombolo (pork loin). The Okrepcevalnica Cantina is near the big bus stop by the post office.

Another good restaurant with good food is the “Moby Dick”, a few hundred metres from the centre on the road towards Piran. Especially the fish, such as tuna, are always praised by guests of the Moby Dick.

In the centre of Izola you should try the fish or seafood at Ribic. Most fresh fish is sold by weight (about 40 euros per kilogram). There are, for example, dentex, monkfish, sea bass, Peter fish or sole. If you don’t know what to order, you can also order a mixed fish platter (35 euros for 2 people).
