Maribor Sights

The city of Maribor is a beautiful old city. It has a lot to offer tourists. The entire old town has now been renovated, there is hardly anything left of the socialist era. We start our tour in Lent. It is the oldest part of Maribor, situated directly on the river Drava.

Lent Maribor

All the Maribor sights described here are north of the river. If you cross the central Glavni Bridge (see picture), Lent is to the west. Lent is famous for the oldest vine in the world. You can’t miss the vine protected by a fence on a house wall directly on the Drava. In the adjacent building there is a small exhibition with wine sales. There are several recommendable restaurants and wine bars along the riverbank. On hot summer days, there is almost a Mediterranean flair here.

The Town Hall of Maribor in Slovenia

The worth seeing town hall square with the town hall is considered the centre of Maribor. On the square, as on many large squares in Maribor, special markets are held on certain days of the week. The late Gothic town hall with its onion tower dates from the 16th century.

In the city centre of Maribor there is a large, continuous pedestrian zone consisting of several streets and alleys. The restaurants in the city centre are good and partly inexp

You should also visit the two big churches of Maribor. Both are in the centre and visible from far away. The red brick church is the Franciscan church. It was only completed in 1900. Even more interesting is the Cathedral of St. John. The bright building was erected in the 13th century in Romanesque style and is now the seat of a cardinal. If you have time, you should climb the almost 60-metre-high tower. From the top you have a wonderful view over Maribor.

For many, the top sight in Maribor is the central wine cellar Vinag, not far from the pedestrian zone of Maribor. If you go through the gate (see picture), you come to an inner courtyard. On the left you go down a flight of stairs. You see hundreds of huge wooden wine barrels in a gigantic cellar complex. You can walk along some of the kilometre-long corridors and admire the gigantic dimensions of the wine cellar.

Many of the well-known wines of eastern Slovenia mature here. You can also see some modern concrete barrels. We were not charged an entrance fee, and wine tasting is possible. Absolutely recommendable are the guided tours through the facility (Mon to Thu 11 am and 2 pm, Fri to Sun 11 am, 2 pm and 4 pm). The guided tours of the wine cellar with wine tasting cost 5 euros (all information is from July 2015).

Opposite the wine cellar is Maribor Castle. The city castle was first built in the 15th century and later extended and rebuilt in various architectural styles. You can also visit it (entrance fee 3 euros). This sight also houses a museum of local history.

You can round off your tour of Maribor in the Mestni Park north of the city centre. The large city park is a quiet place. There is also a small aquarium (entrance fee 4 euros).

Those who still have energy should definitely climb the vineyard north-east of the park. Maribor is internationally known for its wines and vineyards. They border directly on the city area.
