Maribor Shopping

Posted by

Tourists come to Slovenia for different reasons. Some come to Maribor to shop. This is especially true for Austrians, the border is less than 20 km away. Slovenia is cheap, some things are cheaper than in Austria or Germany. This is especially true for services such as hairdressers, nail salons or restaurants. By the way, Austrians don’t have to pay for petrol. Petrol prices in Slovenia are even slightly higher than in Austria (about 5 cents per litre in 2015). On the other hand, cigarette prices are lower; cigarettes still cost less than 4 euros per pack in Slovenia in summer 2015. Since the introduction of the euro in Slovenia, prices are of course much more comparable, the annoying and expensive exchange is no longer necessary. Most shopping tourists in Maribor go either to the city centre or to the large, new Europark shopping centre. These two shopping places are briefly described below.

In the city centre of Maribor there is a large, continuous pedestrian zone consisting of several streets and alleys. The restaurants in the city centre are good and partly inexpensive, many also have a German menu. You will also find countless snack shops with kebabs, pizzas and more. The larger shops often belong to foreign chains – such as C&A or H&M. But there are also some smaller, interesting clothing shops with Slovenian owners. The two well-known drugstore chains Müller and DM are next to each other (see picture).

Even the self-service bakery Backwerk has a branch. The main shopping street in Maribor is the car-free Gosposka Ulica. All the shops described above are in this street or nearby.

The shopping alternative to the city centre has been the Europark shopping centre since it opened in 2007. It is very central for a shopping centre, only about 15-20 minutes walk from the centre of Maribor on the other side of the Drava river. Europark has plenty of parking spaces.

There are about 120 shops in the centre. The big shops include Peek&Cloppenburg, Zara and H&M, for example. The Interspar supermarket is very large and remarkably cheap. Of course, you can also find some restaurants in Europark Maribor. Interspar runs a good self-service restaurant on the first floor of Europark. We also liked the tacos in the Mexican restaurant on the ground floor. At Mc Donald’s, the prices are particularly low. A Big Mac menu costs only 3.80 euros in summer 2015, and a single Big Mac costs just 2 euros. Slovenia is still very cheap in parts.

Opening hours Europark Maribor: Monday to Friday 9am to 9pm (9am to 9pm), Saturday 8am to 9pm and Sunday 9am to 3pm.

An even bigger shopping centre in Slovenia is BTC Ljubljana. There is also a huge shopping paradise on the Mediterranean in Koper, the TUS Koper.
