The Ljubljana market is right in the centre of the city. It is the largest and most important market in the small state of Slovenia. In Ljubljana, people don’t just go to the market to shop. It is also an important meeting place for the inhabitants of the capital.

The location could not be more central. The market is directly on the central Ljubljanica River between the two famous bridges Tromostovje (Three Bridges Bridge) and Dragon Bridge. The market can be divided into three parts. On the one hand, there is the open-air market. Here, mainly fruit, vegetables and clothes are sold. In the market building next door are butchers, bakers, cheese shops and delicatessens. The third part is an extremely elongated market hall along the river. Nowadays there are shops with various products and cafes where people from Ljubljana meet.
The open market is on Vodnik Square (Vodnikov Trg). A large monument commemorates the man who gave the square its name. Valentin Vodnik was an important Slovenian poet and writer (1758 to 1819). Farmers from the surrounding area have been selling their fruit and vegetables here for a long time. Interesting, for example, is the lady who sells homemade open sauerkraut for 2 euros a kilo. It tastes very delicious raw.
Even more interesting is a similar product made from turnips. As a tourist, you can find many bargains on the market in Ljubljana. The price level is somewhat lower than in Germany or Austria.

Towards the Dragon Bridge there are a few fast food places, our tip for a good, interesting and inexpensive lunch in Ljubljana. Two of them serve delicious fish from the Mediterranean. A plate of sardines costs only 3.80 euros. Also tasty are the tuna steaks, grilled dorade, salmon steak and mackerel fillet for 6 to 7 euros each, including a side dish (mostly potatoes). Another stall sells Balkan meat dishes such as cevapcici and pljeskavica.

In the market building there are mainly butchers. More interesting for tourists are the cheese shops with local products. An Italian delicatessen sells, among other things, homemade ravioli.
In general, one has the impression that Slovenia is a culinary combination of its own products, the Balkans, Central Europe and Italy. This is especially noticeable at the Ljubljana market.
The extremely long market halls along the Ljubljanica River are architecturally interesting. The halls with columns and other elements reminiscent of the Renaissance style were built during World War 2.
The architect was Jože Plečnik, who also designed many other buildings in the centre of Ljubljana. Plecnik did not want to completely interrupt the view of the river from the market square. Therefore, he left spaces in several places from which one can look at the river. Overall, the market halls, like almost everything by Jože Plečnik in Ljubljana, are a masterpiece of architecture.
You can also buy furs, which are popular everywhere in Slovenia, at the market in Ljubljana. They are used in Slovenia in winter in street cafés to cover chairs.
Souvenirs from the Ljubljana market include local cheese, long-life salami and honey.
There is a scale at the Ljubljana market. Here, every customer can weigh their products again themselves after a purchase. Trust is good, control is better. A nice relic from the old days.
